New VC Firm Giving Actors More Creative Ownership Backs Omar Sy

Lumina, a newly launched media group and venture capital firm, is backing Carrousel Studios, the latest venture by French actor Omar Sy.
Sy, celebrated for roles in Lupin and The Intouchables, co-founded Carrousel Studios with director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk).
A Star-Driven Production Model
Founded by Gangs of London producer Thomas Benski, Lumina’s mission is to give creators greater control over their intellectual property.
Carrousel Studios, Lumina’s first major partnership, reflects this vision by prioritising intellectual property ownership and sustainability for high-profile talent.
“Too often, artists aren’t at the table to benefit from a project’s long-term success,” said Sy, according to The Financial Times.
Lumina aims to change this by providing creatives with capital and strategic support to own and shape their work.
Beyond Carrousel Studios, Lumina will also produce scripted dramas and documentaries under Magna Studios, led by Marisa Clifford and Davud Karbassioun. It has also closed a deal with Top Boy director Yann Demange’s Wayward Films.
A Path Toward Creative Independence
Lumina’s model aligns with shifts in the entertainment industry, as creators increasingly seek independence from major studios.
The firm has set a $55 million revenue target for its first year, reflecting its ambitions in reshaping content production.
Carrousel Studios, co-founded by Omar Sy, is preparing to launch multiple TV and film projects in 2024. The studio’s partnership-driven approach aims to support talent-led ventures and expand storytelling opportunities globally.
