Colin Kaepernick Unveils Lumi, His New AI Storytelling Platform
Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick has announced the launch of Lumi, an AI-powered storytelling platform.
Lumi aims to change the storytelling process, allowing individuals to create, publish, and monetize their stories regardless of their skill set.
The platform offers end-to-end story creation, simple AI tools, and both physical and digital publishing options, making it easier for creators to bring their stories to life.
With the added benefit of built-in merchandising, creators retain full ownership of their work, bypassing traditional industry gatekeepers.
Addressing Gaps in Storytelling
Kaepernick’s inspiration for Lumi stems from the challenges he faced while running his media company, Ra Vision Media, and publishing company, Kaepernick Publishing.
“Lumi addresses an unnecessary dependency on gatekeepers that slows creators down,” said Kaepernick in a press release.
“This allows creators to get back to what they ultimately want to do: create. The platform empowers creators to work freely and independently, deciding when and how they want to collaborate with others. This independence is crucial for fostering a vibrant and diverse creative ecosystem.”
By integrating AI tools similar to ChatGPT and DALL-E, Lumi helps users create hybrid written-illustrated stories, such as comics and graphic novels.
The platform uses a chatbot for character development and narrative building, coupled with an image-generation tool for illustrations.
This innovative approach aims to make storytelling accessible to those who might lack certain skills or industry connections.
Leveling the Playing Field
Kaepernick emphasizes that Lumi is an extension of his activism, aiming to provide a platform where diverse voices can thrive.
By offering tools and resources, Lumi intends to support creators in overcoming barriers related to fundraising, project management, and distribution.
“We’re going to see a whole new world of stories and perspectives,” Kaepernick told TIME Magazine.
He compares the impact of AI tools on storytelling to the iPhone’s impact on photography, suggesting that while traditional methods won’t be replaced, the accessibility of new tools will lead to a broader range of creative output.
Securing $4M in Seed Funding
Lumi emerges from stealth with $4 million in seed funding, led by Alexis Ohanian’s venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six.
The funding round also saw participation from Kapor Capital, Impellent Ventures, and notable angel investors including Mariam Naficy, David Sze, and Chamillionaire.
Executive-level support from companies like Meta, Anthropic, ContextualAI, Nike, Sleeper, and Pave further drive Lumi’s mission to revolutionize the storytelling landscape.
Lumi’s beta version is now available, allowing creators to sign up and begin exploring the platform’s capabilities.
With engineers from Apple and Reflex AI on board, Lumi is set to become a game-changer in the storytelling industry.
