How This Black Woman-Owned Candle Studio Is Inspiring STEM Learning

Pretty Lux Co.

Pretty Lux Co, the first Black-owned and woman-owned candle-making studio in Middle Georgia, is igniting a love for science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) through the art of making luxury products.

Pretty Lux Co.

Pretty Lux Co. was founded in July 2023 by Anikitia Abram to offer candles, skin, and hair products that are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and created with minimal ingredients.

Abram told Macon that the idea of Pretty Lux Co. was sparked by a personal journey of seeking solace and understanding during moments of anxiety.

This search led to the discovery of how soothing candle-making can be and sparked her curiosity about its science.

The inspiration then stemmed from a desire to share the blend of artistic tranquillity and scientific inquiry with others.

“This foundational inspiration continues to drive every aspect of Pretty Lux Co., guiding our mission to enrich lives through both our products and our educational initiatives,” Abram told Macon.

The Integration Of STEM

To integrate STEM into her company, Abram offers TheCandleSTEM Collective, an initiative that combines the art of candles and skincare making with STEM education.

Through workshops and seminars, participants learn about the science behind the products they use daily.

Abram said the programs are designed to be accessible and engaging, helping to demystify STEM subjects while encouraging a passion for science and technology.

“With the passion for creativity and education, I aim to blend the art of candle-making with STEM principles to enrich our community and ignite a love for learning and craftsmanship,” Abram wrote on LinkedIn.

School And College Initiatives

Pretty Lux Co. also collaborates with local schools and community centers, offering workshops and sponsoring events that promote STEM education and entrepreneurship.

Abram also confirmed that there is a partnership with Spelman College – a private all-female HBCU – where Pretty Lux Co. has the opportunity to provide instruction for the Black Beauty STEMinist Symposia and Lab Intensive.

“Through these initiatives, we aim to empower and inspire the next generation of Black women in STEM, emphasizing the importance of diversity in scientific and entrepreneurial fields,” Abram said.

“These efforts are a testament to our dedication to serving and uplifting the community by providing valuable educational experiences and support.”
