A new state report has advised New York schools to be cautious when using facial recognition and other identifying technology.  Some risks outlined in the report include biometric data breaches, mistaken identification through facial recognition flaws, and students being turned away from school because of technological errors. A new report from the President’s Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration and Shorelight Education has found that students from African nations and the Global South are more likely to have visas rejected. What did the report find? The data from the report was collected through public records requests and found that visa denials to study in the U.S. rose significantly from 2015-2022, especially for Global South countries. Black borrowers have been disproportionately impacted by the Supreme Court’s decision to block President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan in June. A trio of Black fraternity members have teamed up to create Greektory, an app to help members of Greek organizations connect, interact, and collaborate. Building relationships through Greektory Greektory founders Ronard Green, Matthew Plunkett, and Bruson Ovil, all members of prominent Black fraternities, wanted to bridge communication gaps within and between chapters.  Their digital app is aimed at networking, event planning, and community engagement. For example, the networking feature enables users to filter members based on information gathered during onboarding, such as industry, location, and year they joined the organization.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against colleges and universities considering race in their admissions process, leaving the tech industry with mixed opinions on the outcome. How did we get here?
