Nigerian Men Are Using AI To Digitally Undress Women

Nigerian men are using AI to create fake nude images of women, according to Gst. On X, Nigerian men are using AI to create fake photos of women; some users are tagging Grok and commenting “remove her clothes” under women’s photos. After a few minutes, the manipulated images are posted under the original user’s post. These flagged images are rarely removed, allowing women to be digitally assaulted without any repercussions.
Nigerian men digitally altering women’s pictures
58% of Nigerian women say they’ve faced online abuse, according to The State of Online Harms in Nigeria report. Ms Shirley Ewang, Advocacy Lead at Gatefield, told Vanguard that the survey found that women and young people aged 25–34 were disproportionately affected by digital harm, with 58% experiencing some form of online abuse.
“Twitter (X) was ranked as the worst offender, followed by Facebook (29%) and WhatsApp (12%). This is also happening in other countries. An image of an African American woman went viral after men digitally altered her clothes. The original post has since been deleted.
What is being done about this?
Jecinta Egbim, an Nguvu Change Leader, Educationist, Mental Health advocate, and Counselor, told West Africa Weekly that Nigeria is making an effort to create legal frameworks that protect individuals from online violence.
“These include the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) of 2019, which safeguards personal data from misuse and Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc..) Act, which covers a broad range of cybercrimes, such as cyberbullying and online harassment,” Egbim says.
“Additionally, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act prohibits all forms of violence, including online abuse.”
But, she says, there is still more work to do, particularly around the legal system, as “Legal aid must be more accessible and affordable, as many Nigerians struggle to navigate the legal system, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds.”
