NBA Star Chris Paul To Promote Financial Literacy In Oakland Schools With New Partnership

Chris Paul

NBA star Chris Paul has teamed up with Goalsetter, a Black women-owned fintech company founded by Tanya Van Court, promoting financial literacy among middle school students in Oakland, California.

Addressing the Financial Literacy Gap

Goalsetter’s recent study with Ivy League students revealed a gap in financial knowledge, with many failing to answer basic financial literacy questions correctly.

“Empowering our youth with the knowledge and tools to secure a financially sound future is not just a commitment, it’s a necessity,” Paul said in a press release sent to AFROTECH.

“We owe it to the next generation to lay the groundwork for financial success, ensuring they’re equipped to make informed decisions that will shape their lives and communities for the better.”

The initiative will impact 1,400 Edna Brewer Middle School and Montera Middle School students by providing them access to “Goalsetter Classroom.”

Interactive Learning for Oakland Students

The classroom curriculum incorporates quizzes and interactive content involving pop culture elements.

Students will also receive a Cashola Card, a Mastercard-supported debit card designed for younger users, which encourages learning financial concepts before spending.

Additionally, each student will be given a savings account managed through Goalsetter’s app and $40 in Nike stock to kickstart their financial journey.

“This is more than just a conversation; it is a step towards bridging the financial literacy gap for youth across America,” Court said.

“Chris Paul’s involvement has been instrumental in driving home the message that financial education is crucial for all, irrespective of socio-economic background.”

This partnership also includes the Oakland Fund for Public Innovation and Nike.
