Legaltech Platform Launches New Initiative To Connect Black Lawyers With Black Households

Kisha A. Brown

Kisha A. Brown, an award-winning civil rights attorney and speaker, is the founder of Justis Connection, a Black-owned legal tech platform. Justis Connection enables individuals to connect with trusted Black lawyers across various legal practices. It has recently announced its plan to prepare 1,000 Black lawyers ready to serve 1 million Black households across the United States.

Black lawyers are still a minority

Even though Black people in the US make up 13% of the population, Black lawyers represent approximately 5% of the legal profession, a figure that has remained stagnant for over two decades, as stated by the Black American Bar Association, The lack of representation often affects how the legal system treats Black people.

“Legal protection is local. You can’t rely on a random search to find someone who truly understands your community, your culture, and your case. You need a local lawyer who’s invested in your outcomes, not just your billable hours,” Brown says.

The role of tech in Justis Connection

Brown acknowledges that there are several other online lawyer referral services, but she believes they operate in quantity rather than what I consider quality. In an interview with Mochi Mag, Brown stated that she wanted to create a service that met people where they were, as the average person is often intimidated by the legal process.

“The search results need to be helpful, not overwhelming. I wanted technology to streamline and enhance the legal matchmaking process. Things like algorithms, auto-matching, and natural language processing make it so somebody could enter their problem, and the system would be able to identify their legal issue.”

Justis Connection represents various legal practice areas, including business Law, estate planning, civil rights and criminal defense, family law, personal injury, real estate, tax law, cannabis Law, and more.

The expansion has been supported by several Black-led organizations, such as BuyBlack, CHIPS Network, the National Association of Black Cannabis Lawyers, and ShoptheHood.TV, Black Men Network, and Minority Cannabis Business Association.
