Black Mother-Daughter Duo Publish ‘ABCs Of Cybersecurity’ Adventure Book Preparing Kids For The Digital World
Mother-daughter duo Claudia and London Walker are set to release “The ABCs of Cybersecurity,” an adventure book and mobile game to equip children with the tools needed to navigate the digital world.
Meet Claudia Walker
Claudia Walker is an educator who paved the way to ensure financial literacy is accessible to children.
Before Walker entered the education field, she worked on Wall Street as a financial analyst.
Walk then shared her experiences with students about the money capital and attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) after noticing many weren’t exposed to finance or HBCUs.
Aiming to resolve the knowledge gap, she launched the publishing company HBCU Prep School in 2020 to normalize the world of investing and higher education.
In 2022, Walker launched The ABCs of Black Wall Street, a coloring book and board book.
The book features the untold stories of Tulsa’s Greenwood District to learn about historic innovators, activists, entrepreneurs, and establishments of one of the wealthiest Black communities.
Her book series also includes “The ABCs of HBCUs.”
The ABCs of Cybersecurity
Walker and her 15-year-old daughter, in February 2023, accepted the invitation to attend a White House roundtable about cybersecurity in the Black community.
“Sitting at this roundtable, and you have all these prominent figures of cybersecurity around you, and you’re the youngest person, it was really amazing to know that my opinion was valued,” 15-year-old Walker told AfroTech.
“I was talking about the way that cybersecurity isn’t taught to teenagers. I have a computer I use for school, and I’ve never been taught how to stay safe on the internet. That’s never something that my school has told me.”
The ABCs of Cybersecurity, with illustrations from Dissirama Laurencia, takes readers on a high-tech adventure into the exhilarating world of digital security.
It equips kids with the tools they need to defeat cyber villains, navigate the digital world confidently, and discover exciting careers in cybersecurity.
The book also includes an interactive online game that lets readers put their cybersecurity knowledge to the test.
In the book, separate from the safety measures around internet use, readers will find changemakers in cybersecurity.
These include, Camille Stewart Gloster, Deputer National Cyber Director, Technology and Ecosystem Security, and the White House Office of the National Cyber Director.
It also includes 13-year-old Elijah Muhammad, the youngest Black individual to obtain a computer science and cybersecurity college degree.
“I hope that children can see themselves in cyber. I hope that they feel that by reading the book or interacting with the game that they feel like they can take ownership of their learning and their technology,” said Walker.
