10 Inspiring Designers In Tech To Follow This Black History Month

What I love about the tech design community, is that we are so invested in our collective growth. I find myself constantly looking to network, collaborate with, and learn from other designers in the field.

The following list is a collection of some of the Black Designers across the diaspora who are creating stunning experiences, invaluable products, but most importantly, long-lasting communities.

1. Mariam Braimah @ Netflix Design Team

Mariam is a Product Designer at Netflix. She also founded the Kimoyo Fellowship, which is a design program teaching the skills required to become an entry-level UI/UX designer at Nigeria’s leading tech companies.

2. Daniel Locko @ YUX Design

Daniel Locko, along with Yann Le Beux and Camille Kramer- Courbariaux founded YUX. Daniel is the Lead UX/UI designer at YUX. This is a UX Design company based in Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire that designs experiences and products for social good. Check out their inspiring work here.

3. Karen Santos @ Picpay

Karen is a Product Designer at PicPay. She is also building a beautiful community through her platform UX Para Minas Pretas. This is a space for Black Female UX Designers in Brazil. Check out the community she is building here.

4. Tosh Juma @ IDEO

Tosh Juma is a Managing Director for IDEO Nairobi. Juma is also the Founder and Creative Director of the Nairobi Design Institute. The institute has a year-long program that introduces students to human-centred design and design thinking. Learn more about the Insitute here.

5. Sharae Gibbs @ She Designs

Sharae Gibbs is the founder of She Designs, a UX course for women of color. She Designs offers UX training, mentorship, and career development. Learn more about the platform here

6. Daniel Autry @ Washington Post

Daniel Autry is a Product Designer at the Washington Post. Daniel also does a lot of amazing work at the intersection of design and mental health. View more of Daniel’s work on here.

7. Omobolanle Banwo @ Geneza Brands

Omobonlanle is a UI/UX Designer and Founder of Geneza School of Design. The School teaches individuals in Nigeria how to become UI/Graphic Designers. Learn more about the School here

8. Wes O’haire @ Dropbox

Wes O’haire is currently a product designer at Dropbox. Wes also founded BlacksWhoDesign. Blacks Who Design is a Twitter database that highlights all of the inspiring Black designers in the industry. The goal is to inspire new designers, encourage people to diversify their feeds, and discover amazing talent. Check out more here

9. Lenora Porter @ Salesforce

Lenora Porter is a Designer at Salesforce. When she is not designing, she manages Black Women in Product Design. A space allowing Black women designers to learn and collaborate with one another. Interested in joining the group? Join here
