South Africa’s Largest Community For POC In Tech Launches Game-Changing Platform
Registered non-profit organization Darkies in Tech has launched a new website designed to drive inclusion by providing a centralized platform for professionals of color within the South African tech industry.
Founded by Ntsako Mgiba in February 2021, Darkies in Tech has become the largest vetted community of its kind in South Africa, with over 450 members, including founders, investors, and ecosystem builders.
The community has consistently hosted educational and social events aimed at creating a more inclusive environment for Black professionals in tech.
Addressing Exclusion in South Africa’s Tech Scene
The platform’s creation stems from Mgiba’s frustration with the exclusionary nature of South Africa’s tech startup scene, particularly for Black founders.
“Many of us faced similar challenges navigating the ecosystem – feeling left out of the trusted networks where knowledge, opportunities, and funding were shared,” Mgiba shared with Disrupt Africa.
“Unlike other communities, we rarely shared the insights we had amongst ourselves; we were highly fragmented.”
Initially a WhatsApp group for Black founders to share challenges and opportunities, the initiative quickly evolved into Darkies in Tech.
The launch of its website aims to streamline access to this thriving community, enabling easier discovery and creating connection between professionals of color in tech.
Future Growth and Expansion Plans
In addition to the new platform, Darkies in Tech has big plans for 2025, including the launch of member programs that offer software perks, exclusive investor dinners, and expanded networking opportunities.
Self-funded thus far, the organization also seeks Public Benefit Organization (PBO) status to attract corporate sponsorships.
Pan-African expansion is also on the horizon, with plans to launch chapters in Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana.
