Mayor Adams Launches Initiative to Establish New York City As A Global Hub For Digital Assets

Mayor Eric Adams

New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed Executive Order 57, creating the New York City Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain — the first mayor-led office of its kind in the US. This move aims to make New York a global leader in digital assets like cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Mayor Adams has also appointed Moises Rendon as the office’s executive director. His first task will be to create a commission of digital asset leaders to provide guidance and advice on the office’s initiatives.

The Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain

The new office will encourage the responsible use of digital assets and blockchain, create economic opportunities for New Yorkers, attract top talent, and strengthen the city’s role as a global center for finance and technology. Mayor Adams appointed Moises Rendon as the office’s first executive director, who will start by forming a commission of digital asset experts to guide the office’s work.

“In 2022, I became the first American mayor to convert my first three paychecks into crypto, and this past May, our administration hosted the first-ever crypto summit at Gracie Mansion,” Mayor Adams said in a press release.

“Today, with the nation’s first mayoral agency focused solely on digital assets and blockchain technology, we continue to signal the opportunities this new form of technology can bring to New York City.”

How will the new office encourage economic growth?

The Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain will drive long-term economic growth by making sure digital assets contribute to and strengthen New York City’s economy through efforts such as:

  • Supporting innovation and growth while ensuring cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies are developed responsibly in New York City.
  • Connecting the digital asset industry with government to promote responsible innovation and cooperation among all stakeholders.
  • Partnering with the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) and coordinating efforts across city agencies to align policies, services, and digital asset projects.
  • Working with state and federal partners to advance policies that attract blockchain and crypto initiatives that benefit the city and follow all laws and regulations.

“The age of digital assets is here, and with it comes the chance to grow our economy, attract world-class talent, expand opportunities for underbanked communities, and make government more user-friendly. I’m looking forward to working closer with Moises Rendon as we help make New York City the tech capital of the world,” Mayor Adams added.
