Historic Black Church Will Fund Black Student Council at the University Of Missouri
The Virginian Church, Alfred Street Baptist Church, has agreed to provide financial support to the Legion of Black Collegians following the University of Missouri’s announcement that it will end funding for several organizations.
In April, the university shared that the Legion of Black Collegians—its historic Black student governing body — and other minority-associated groups would no longer receive funding. Additionally, these groups will not be recognized as university-sponsored organizations, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Mizzou officials said they chose to scrap the funding to comply with DEI changes issued by the Department of Justice in July.

Pastor Howard-John Wesley told the congregation that the church would support the Black student governing body, as stated by Baptist News Global. “Blackness is under attack in the United States of America,” Wesley said during the service. “Our history, our heritage, our rights are all being pushed back under this administration.”
In 2025, the church donated more than $132,000 to eliminate student debt for graduating seniors at Saint Augustine’s University, a historically Black university in North Carolina. In March, the congregation paid $1 million toward overdue rent for over 300 families facing eviction.
