Black Creator Launches App That Allows Creators To Film Vertical and Horizontal Video Simultaneously

Black creator Derrick Downey Jr. has launched DualShot Recorder, an app that allows creators to film vertically and horizontally, according to PetaPixel. The app creates videos in both portrait (9:16) and landscape (16:9) from an iPhone’s dual rear cameras in a single take. In just 24 hours, DualShot Recorder has created such a buzz that it has reached number one on the Apple App Store.

Several content creators create videos for different platforms. TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts videos are shot vertically, whilst long-form YouTube videos are filmed horizontally. Traditionally, creators filmed multiple videos for different formats.

The app has two modes: users can film in Dual-Lens Mode, using both rear cameras to capture vertically and horizontally. Or users can opt for Single-Lens Mode, which lets them record both vertical and horizontal videos from a single camera, including from the front-facing camera, as per PetaPixel.

Other features include real-time storage, which provides users with a rough estimate of the remaining recording time, and manual control of the device’s torch or flashlight during filming.

The app costs $6.99, with no ads and no account required. Downey says a version for Android users will launch soon. The app also does not collect or transmit any user data.

About Derrick Downey Jr.

Derrick Downey Jr. is a content creator best known for his videos featuring the neighborhood squirrels in Los Angeles. Speaking to People Magazine, Downey said he became the “Squirrel Whisperer” during a period of “depression” in 2022.

“My way of getting out of that [dark place] was to walk around my neighborhood and connect with the squirrels,” he recalls. “I would sit down and have moments to reflect [with them]. I would have these conversations with these squirrels, and one day, I happened to record a moment of me with Richard and Maxine.”

His videos gained worldwide recognition, and in 2024, he published his first self-published children’s book, Hand and Paw: Maxine’s Tale of Compassion. The DualShot Recorder is his latest venture.
