This Nigerian AI-Powered App Has 90% Of Its Users Outside Of Nigeria

Breni is an AI-powered learning app that simplifies learning by providing students with personalised content tailored to different learning styles and languages. The app launched in August and has already attracted over 3,000 users from more than 20 countries worldwide, with 90% of them outside Nigeria, according to TechPoint Africa.

Founders Sadiq Umar and Bilal Abdullahi met while studying computer science at the Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano. They both discovered a love for technology and its potential to improve the ecosystem in the North.

After finishing their studies, they both worked at a Nigerian fintech company, Kayi. In 2024, they left the company to launch Breni.

How does Breni work?

Breni creates personalised content to make education fun and easy. It uses AI-integrated tools to break down lessons into short, micro modules for simple understanding. It also utilizes gamification, including streaks, leaderboards, and quizzes, to make learning a competitive, engaging, and enjoyable experience.

“The app employs cognitive science and technologies that social media platforms use to keep users engaged. Its spaced repetition revisits concepts at proven intervals for memory so learners don’t forget past learnings,” Umar told TechPoint Africa.

Users receive content tailored to their personal information. Breni adapts learning to the age, level of experience, location, and preferred learning styles of each individual. Users can learn in languages including Hausa, Spanish, French, and more.

The platform operates as a freemium model. Its free version contains ads, which provides the company with an income stream. Meanwhile, its subscription model allows access to an unlimited number of courses.

Attracting a global audience

Although Breni was designed for Nigerians, it has attracted a global audience, with 90% of Breni’s audience residing outside the country. Nepal has the highest number of users, accounting for over 40% of Breni’s total users, with Russia and Nigeria following behind. The app has also gained users in countries like Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, the UAE, South Africa, Canada, the US, and the UK.

Although both founders managed to leverage their countries in some of these countries to attract users to the app, its use in Asia was mainly driven by referrals from other users.
