NBA All-Stars Launch New AI Platform To Simplify End-Of-Life Admin

Russell Westbrook

NBA MVP Russell Westbrook, NBA All-Star Kemba Walker, and NCAA champion Donnell Beverly Jr. recently launched Eazewell, a tech startup that helps ease the burden of funeral planning. The startup is now launching its AI-Powered Care Transitions Platform.

The platform aims to support families, hospices, senior living communities, and life insurers with the administrative tasks at the end of life, from notifying banks and Social Security to cancelling utilities and closing social media accounts.

AI To Streamline End-of-Life Tasks

The platform streamlines responsibilities such as account closures, documentation, utility cancellations, mail forwarding, and family communication. For hospices, it offers 24/7 communication tools and real-time updates on care. For insurers, it promises faster claims processing and improved staff satisfaction. A pilot with insurance partners is set to launch later this month.

“Digital death management isn’t optional anymore, it’s essential,” Donnell Beverly Jr., CEO and co-founder of Eazewell, said in a press release. “The average estate now includes more digital accounts than physical assets. Families discover dozens of accounts they never knew existed, including services still charging monthly fees, social media profiles vulnerable to hacking, loyalty points expiring, and email accounts filling with sensitive information.”

Beverly added that working with institutions has shown the broader impact: “This is not just a family problem; it’s an institutional one,” he told AFROTECH™. “When our AI reduces that friction, staff satisfaction improves, claims move faster, and families report feeling supported around the clock. The connection between compassion and efficiency has been even stronger than we expected.”

Eazewell: A Response to Personal Loss

The idea for Eazewell began years ago, after Beverly Jr. and Westbrook suddenly lost their high school teammate and close friend, Khelcey Barrs III. The experience revealed how few resources exist for families navigating funeral arrangements—and how outdated many services are.

“Years ago, Donnell and I connected through the loss of a close friend. Witnessing the profound impact it had on the family left a lasting impression on me,” said Westbrook, who has publicly expressed his grief over the years—through wristbands honoring Barrs and game-day dedications.

Reflecting on the passing of both his parents, Beverly Jr. added: “Phone calls and paperwork took up time I would rather have spent mourning and consoling my extended family. We built Eazewell so people don’t have to go through that alone.”
