Mastercard Opens Its First Office in Ghana To Build Presence In West Africa

Mastercard has announced the opening of its first office in Ghana as the company aims to strengthen its presence in the West African country.

The latest move is predicted to help Ghana’s economy by creating more jobs and innovating tech, which signifies the country’s emerging influence in the region’s fintech industry.

“Ghana presents a tremendous opportunity for Mastercard to enhance its geographical presence in West Africa. We are committed to attracting and nurturing top talent and fostering an ecosystem that aims to contribute positively to the local economy and technological advancement,” Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head, West Africa, Mastercard, said in a press release.

Mastercard invests in West Africa

The company’s bigger goals are to invest in the region’s developing digital economy and provide new payment solutions that can address the specific needs of African consumers and businesses.

“Opening our office in Ghana marks an important milestone in our commitment to deepening relationships across the region,” Mark Elliott, Division President for Africa at Mastercard said. “Our growth strategy for West Africa is ambitious, and establishing a formal presence here allows us to better serve the specific needs of our customers. We are eager to leverage our global expertise and innovative capabilities to introduce advanced payment technologies in this market.”

Mastercard expands across Africa

Outside of creating a new office in Ghana, they’ve also grown their footprint all over the continent, with current offices in Cairo, Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi, and Mauritius.

The company has a history of working with local businesses and fintech startups to move financial inclusion in Africa. They’ve partnered with established Absa Bank Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation to start initiatives like the Absa Fintech and Agritech Support Program.
