ICE Detention Facility Owner Moves Into Developing AI-powered “Man Camps.
Target Hospitality, a company that holds families detained by ICE, is pivoting to build an AI data center. As the rise in AI data centres continues, companies are using temporary villages, or “man camps,” to house workers.
“Man-camps” are temporary housing communities created for oil and gas workers in remote locations, but they are now being repurposed as AI data centers. For example, a Bitcoin mining facility in rural Dickens County, Texas, has been converted into a 1.6 gigawatt data center, according to Bloomberg. Workers have access to a gym, game rooms, and a cafeteria.

Target Hospitality has signed several contracts totalling to $132 million to build and operate the Dickens County camp, which could house more than 1,000 workers.
The company allegedly views the US data center boom as its most lucrative growth opportunity, as chief commercial officer Troy Schrenk described it as “the largest, most actionable pipeline I’ve ever seen, as reported by TechCrunch.

Target owns the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas, which holds families detained by ICE. It is the same facility to which 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken after he and his father were detained in Minneapolis while returning home from school, according to The Houston Chronicle.
Target signed a contract last year worth $250 million over the next five years to house and feed families the government claims are in the country illegally. Court filings allege that food at the facility contained worms and mold, and that children were not provided accommodations for allergies or special dietary needs.
