Netflix’s Workforce Is The Most Diverse Its Been In A While — It’s Now 52% Female And 11% Black

As its latest diversity report shows, Netflix has made more progress in regards to diversity and inclusion, and according to the report, as of last year, more than half of the Los Gatos company’s global workforce and more than half of its leadership was female.

Meanwhile, nearly 11% of its US workforce is Black and about 9% is Hispanic or Latinx — proportions that are significantly higher than those at many other tech companies.

All those figures rose significantly in 2021 from the year before, according to the report, and the company became more diverse even as it increased its global workforce by 25% last year.

In a blog post penned by VP inclusion strategy Vernā Myers, the streamer revealed that Black leadership (directors and above) increased from 10.9% to 13.3%, and US Hispanic or Latino/a/x leadership (directors and above) grew from 4.3% to 4.4%.

Last year, 51.7% of Netflix’s 10,000 worldwide employees were female last year. That was up from 48.7% the year before. Women comprised 51.1% of its leadership, with director roles and higher. That figure was up from 47.8% in 2020.

For employees in creative or corporate roles, women made up 59.5% of Netflix’s workforce in 2021, up from 57.3% the year before.

Those increases came despite the Covid-19 pandemic, which prompted many women to leave the workforce because much of the burden of caring for their homebound families fell on their shoulders.

Vernā Myers said: “We’ve expanded the inclusion strategy team to sharpen our inclusion lens around the world, adding leaders in Latin America and Asia-Pacific, while expanding the team in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“We have a lot more work to do, particularly in recruiting more Latino/a/x, Indigenous and other historically excluded talent in the U.S.. We’re also improving how we understand the representation of our workforce outside of the US reporting requirements – like additional gender identities, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, and in other countries.”
