The Power Of Tech: Afrobeats Artist Davido Raises $600K Using Social Media For Orphanages Across Nigeria

The recent events where Davido asked his loyal fans, friends, and colleagues for money – raising a whopping 200M Naira, which will be distributed to organizations helping vulnerable Nigerians, has shown the power of technology and how it can be used for good.

On November 17 – the musician took to Instagram and Twitter and asked fans and friends who believe “I’ve given you a hit song” to send money to a bank account he detailed under his name.

He asked them to send one million nairas each, and they did just that, and in less than two days, the funds amounted to more than NGN 200 million (US$600,000).

Davido on Saturday said the appeal had been made in a “playful manner,” but it had exceeded his expectations. After raising 200M Niara, he added his contribution of 50M Niara and announced that all the money would be sent to orphanages across Nigeria.

What started as a joke has now turned into an annual giveaway. In a statement made over the weekend – the singer said it was his goal to now start doing this fundraising for his birthday every year to give back.

“I have always been passionate about giving back and helping people,” he said.

To achieve this, he had constituted a 5-man committee to take care of the logistics.
